Women softball tourney champs... A Plainview ladies softball team was recently crowned tournament champions in the Northeast Nebraska Women’s Slowpitch League. Members of the team include, front row (l-r): Brittany Waldow, Brittany White, Abby Krueger, Jen Hodson and Ashlee Masat; and back row (l-r): Nicole White, Sonya Legate, Sara Krueger, Randee Rix and Kari Ekberg. Not present are Katlyn Horras and Whitney White.

Kenny and Paige Albin of Plainview are parents to new twins: Ellison Renee` (left), and Hazel Paige (right), born to them on July 20, 2020. Hazel Paige Albin was born at 7:51 a.m., was 6 lbs., 5 oz. and 19 ¼ inches long, and Ellison Renee` Albin was born at 7:53 a.m., was 5 lbs., 8 oz. and was 19 inches long. Grandparents are Kreg and Renee` Mitteis of Orchard and Terri Albin of Plainview. Great-grandparents are Arvid and Renita Erb of Orchard, Bill Mitteis of Royal and Marge May of O’Neill.

Stable demand for land, decreased sales volume, and low interest rates continue to provide support and the market adjusted to pandemic induced social distancing. Community Service now a Graduation Requirement By the time a student is ready to graduate from Plainview Public Schools, he or she has to have a total of 240 credits. Plainview Public Schools has recently implemented community service for grades 9-12 as part of the graduation requirements. Boyer receiving cancer treatment in Omaha Word was received last week that longtime Plainview resident, teacher, and Pirate wrestling head coach Dean Boyer had been suddenly diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia-Subtype M5, and has begun receiving treatment at the Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha. Masks required for return to school The Plainview Board of Education voted affirmatively on Monday evening to require staff and students to wear masks when they come back to school on Thursday, August 27. 65th Anniversary Card Shower The family of Don and Grace Mauer of Plainview has requested a card shower in honor of the Mauer’s 65th wedding anniversary on August 31. Cards will reach them at 407 N. 4th St., Plainview, NE 68769.

City, CHI host picnic in park In lieu of the Klown Festival this year, CHI Health Plainview Hospital staff and the City of Plainview staff hosted a free barbecue in the park in an August 8 event. The Klown Festival festivities were canceled because of COVID-19 concerns in June, but with some social distancing, and some masks and gloves, members of the community were still able to celebrate unity in a small way this year. Troy Johnston cooked hot dogs and Curt Hart grilled hamburgers with a host of hospital and city staff helping serve and even provide curb-side pickup of the meals.

Frontier Insurance hosts Plainview FFA... Staff at Frontier Insurance in downtown Plainview played host to a group of Plainview FFA youth to a local field plot for some hands-on learning prior to the school year. With the help of an adjuster, the staff helped the kids review staging and the wind/hail damage that has been in the area. The youth learned about lodging, green snap, hail, cut offs and defoliation. They also split into pairs and counted their own percentage of loss and payable losses. Another trip had been planned as well, for the youth to review appraisals, bin measurements and possible harvest losses.

IRS.gov for federal payments The Internal Revenue Service continues to look for ways to help people who were unable to provide their information in time to receive Economic Impact Payments for their children. As part of that effort, the Internal Revenue Service announced it will reopen the registration period for federal beneficiaries who didn't receive $500 per child payments earlier this year. The family of Allan and Lois Norris are requesting a card shower for them as they look back over their last 60 years of marriage. The Norris’ were we on August 28, 1960. The couple has four children: Cliff (Laura) Norris of Norfolk; Dean (Kim) Norris of Correctionville, Iowa; Scott (Jamie) Norris of Plainview and Jill (Eric) Meyer of Creighton. They also have nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Cards will reach the couple at 306 N. 4th St., Plainview, NE 68769.

Bowling added to NSAA winter activity roster The school board met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday, August 10. At the meeting, board members passed a motion to approve both a boys and girls varsity bowling team for the upcoming school year. Plainview project funded by grant While in York last week, Gov. Pete Ricketts announced the recipients of $10,251.498 in awards from the Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund (NAHTF) for 2020. Youth competes in National High School Finals Rodeo Jessica Stevens has been competing in rodeo competitions for 12 years and recently competed in the National High School Finals Rodeo in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Social Center still unable to open From the Senior Center By Diane Elwood, Manager Many know that the Plainview Social Center has been closed to the public since March 17 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. It has been a struggle and we know that many of you are missing the socialization. The staff, along with the volunteers, are missing all of the visiting as well. Workman's dropped, tort still remains Plainview's City Council held a special meeting on Thursday, August 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the city library for the purpose of discussing employment of the Police Chief, the disciplinary hearing, and legal strategy related to pending or imminent litigation. Several lawyers were also in attendance via Zoom to represent both the city and Police Chief Yosten.
