About two years ago Beth Ramold, the school nurse, and Jen Hodson, the elementary school principal, started the process of applying to be a Heart Safe School.
There is a list of requirements to earn this honor which include:
AED locations make it possible to retrieve an AED, apply pads and deliver a shock (if needed) in under 3 minutes AEDs have clear signage and are checked monthly Each AED has a first responder kit attached
Develop and Cardiac Emergency plan and review it annually
Have a communication code to notify our first response team
Local EMS have been notified of our emergency plan and the locations of the AEDs
The emergency plan and AED location has also been shared with outside groups who use the school facilities
CPR-AED training for the First Response Team is updated at least every two years and there is a system in place to track retraining.
All faculty and staff know where the AEDs are located and how to access them.
All faculty and staff have annual education on sudden cardiac arrest awareness, signs and how to recognize it. Communication procedures and the school’s cardiac emergency response plan are shared with staff.
