List opens Highway 20 Studio in old Colette's
Shortly after Colette Halsey put her business, Colette’s Beauty, on the market back in December, Jesslyn Aschoff-List saw it as an opportunity to own her own salon, Hwy 20 Studio.
“The name for the salon is pretty self-explanatory,” said List. “It sits right on Highway 20 where a lot of traffic goes through, so I thought what better name than Hwy 20 Studio.”
List had not thought about owning her own salon until recently. “My husband, Calan, and I knew we wanted to end up back in the Plainview area and raise our family in a small rural community like what we both grew up in,” said List.
List graduated from Plainview Public Schools in 2012 and had not planned on being back in town, let alone owning her own business. “Life changes and I quickly realized that home is wherever your family is,” said List.
After high school, List attended Joseph’s College of Beauty in Norfolk. List enrolled in the 14-month program and graduated in 2014.
Being a beautician was not what List originally wanted to be. “I wanted to be a vet tech, I never had any intentions of doing hair,” said List. “It was just something that I had been good at and liked doing but never thought about pursuing a career in, but it was the best career I could have chosen for myself.”
After graduating from Joseph’s College of Beauty, List worked at Donelda Hansen’s The Wright Cut. Shortly after that, List worked at Cost Cutters for five years.
Now that List runs her own business, she hopes to learn how to progress even further and be as accommodating as possible to ensure everyone’s services are top notch. So far, List has learned that not everything goes perfectly as planned. “I personally like schedules and structure, so when we completely remodeled the salon all of that flew out the window for me,” said List. “Thankfully, my husband is a very patient man and can do mostly everything that I come up with.”
List is looking forward to having a flexible schedule to spend time with her family. “I’m also excited to be involved with the community again,” said List. “There’s still a lot of familiar people that I knew from when I grew up, but there’s also a lot of people that are newer to town.”
Hwy 20 Studio offers hair cuts for adults and kids, hair coloring and highlights, facial waxing, and special occasion hair for weddings and prom. “Weddings and proms are some of my favorite occasions and I love being apart of people’s big day,” said List. The studio will eventually sell retail.
To book an appointment, List has an online booking service through Facebook. “Just search Hwy 20 Studio, click ‘like’ on the business page, and from there you can book appointments,” said List.
If there is not access to Facebook, List can be reached at 402-649-1640 to book an appointment. List will gladly take walk-ins if time allows.
